August 2018 to July 2020 Senior Quantity Surveyor R W Armstrong Ltd
After 18 years with Vale Southern Ltd I decided to join RW Armstrong for a new challenge and to work
on different styles of projects. The business is well known for carrying out high-end residential
projects throughout central south England. Contracts ranging between £2 – 5m.
Carried out all the usual post contract surveying duties, including contract and subcontract management, reporting to senior management.
Projects worked upon included a £2m swimming pool house and tennis court to a private house, a £4.5m new build 3 bed houses with external works, and a £3.7m new build 6 bed properties.
Oct 2000 – August 2018 Surveyor / Managing Surveyor Vale Builders Southern
Invited to join Vale Builders Southern Ltd as Contract Surveyor. In 2004 promoted to the position of
Chief Surveyor when the previous person left. In 2007 one of the Directors retired and I was promoted
to Managing Surveyor, carrying out and ensuring all the usual duties were performed by the
surveying team as well as running my own projects.
Vale is a medium sized family owned company dealing with Council, County Council, and private commercial projects, especially forming successful partnerships with commercial clients and gaining repeat business.
In 2017 Vale changed their name to Vale Southern Construction Ltd to reflect the status of projects we participate in.

These included building, or extending 31 Premier Inns, building or refurbishing pubs and restaurants for a variety of pub chains, and local council new build and refurbishment works.
Oct 1995 to Oct 2000 Commercial Manager Futuremost Ltd
Joined Futuremost Ltd as Commercial Manager to head up their sales and estimating department in
the specialist subcontract market dealing directly with clients, architects or main contractors. Also
expanded the role to take on all aspects of post contract duties including contractual and financial
reporting to the MD.
Other work included helping with writing the company’s QA ISO 9002 manual and
introduced new procedures to accommodate the operations. Also oversaw the company’s
Y2K audit and replacement programme.
Sept 1988 to 1995 Senior Quantity Surveyor Costain Construction Ltd
Joined Costin Construction Ltd as a Senior Surveyor at their Wimbledon office, responsible
to the Area Surveyor and having assistants under me.
Dealing with projects in the London area, all new build with a value range of £5 – £38m.
Contracts included 61-71 Victoria Street, SW1, and Rose Court, Southwark, SE1.
April 1992 transferred to Costain International, based in Bahrain, (Jalal Costain) as a Senior
Project Surveyor. Whilst out there, the current Area Surveyor was transferred to Hong Kong
and I took over his duties, including general office area duties directly responsible to the
Area Manager and UK Head Office.
Due to Gulf War 1, projects became frozen in Bahrain and I was made redundant so came
back home in June 1993.
July 1984 to 1988 Freelance Quantity Surveyor
Gee Walker Slater, part of the Wiggins Group PLC as Contracts Surveyor dealing with
all aspects of main contractors surveying, including subcontractor enquiries, orders and
accounts. Range of projects included high quality refurbishment of pubs and hotels,
extension and refurbishment of police station and building of industrial units.
Value range: £40k – £1m
R Mansell at their Westminster office as Contracts Surveyor, later promoted to Senior
Surveyor and having three assistants. Again, dealing with all aspects of contract works.
Projects included extension and refurbishment of quality flats and new build houses.
Value range: £500k – £1m
Gleeds Chartered QS Main project Hays Galleria, part of the London Bridge City development, £14fit-
out of shell and core for Lloyds Bank. Dealing with production of sub-contract packages, clients
financial reviews, anticipated F/As, design and progress meetings, and close liaison with the
Main Contractor in dealing with accounts and claims.
Other works included running a £400k office fit-out project from inception to completion
and budget estimates for various types of projects including proposed motorway service
stations.
City Construction Ltd as Senior Surveyor to head up their new surveying department and
supervise their new contracts and oversee the brickwork subcontract and development
sections.
Dix (Builders) Ltd as Senior / Chief Surveyor with full surveying responsibilities and two assistants.
Feb 1980 to 1984 Site Quantity Surveyor CJ Sims Ltd
Invited to join CJ Sims Ltd, a medium size London Main Contractor as a Site Surveyor, directly responsible to the Chief Surveyor and dealing with all aspects of post contract work, including valuations, financial statements, subcontractor accounts and final accounts. Range of projects included refurbishment of telephone exchange, tenants’ association clubs, new build school, warden care flats and a sports hall. Value range: £200k – £1m
